About Essen

Essen is a German city located in the north part of the developed area of Ruhr and is today part of the Westphalia Land. With a population of 600,000 people, the city lies on the banks of River Ruhr and is the 8th-largest city in Germany. Place to visit in Essen

The Ottonian Mathilde Cross is a 10th century abbey and is used today as the focus point of religious life in the area. The first church build on the site dates back in 865. Villa Hügel was built by Alfred Krupp, who was the owner of Krupp Factories, in 1874 and has a large park and 269 rooms. During its construction, the palace featured many technical peculiarities and novelties, such as telephone systems, electric external and internal telegraph, gas pipe and the new invented central heating system.

In the south-west part of Essen, the boroughs of Werden and Kettwig stand for towns during the Middle Ages and modern period but they were annexed in 1929 and 1975 and preserve much of the original German. While the north part of the city, with its industrial activity, was almost completely destroyed during the end of World War II, these two still have the original central squares. In Werden the abbey was founded in 798 and it is today, after a long restoration, a papal basilica.

The atmosphere in these small neighborhoods is unique, with small coffee places and restaurants and parks and they are in contrast with the industrial character of the city.
