El Achir is hilly town in the Bordi Bou Arreridj province considered as the crossroads between the east and west, north and South of Algeria. El Achir is a cross between a steeped zone and high plains area.
El Achir has a typical warm summer and very cold winter. But the best time to come is during the Spring Festival and most cheap flights to El Achir are timed on this season. Local residents join other residents of Bordi Bou Arreridj in celebration of a traditional festival held every first Friday of March and go on a family picnic on the hills of El Achir. The Olive plant is the main focus of the celebration where local folks cook cakes with natural ingredients such as semolina, eggs and butter plus of course the Olives. The locals practice the tradition of Setifians which is of Jewish-Muslim traditions and this is the reason of the importance of spring and the Olives.
El Achir is on the east part of Algeria and trip from east to the south can be very difficult as traveling to the cities in the Sahara would last a day as there are no good roads and train and bus connection are particularly in bad conditions. For longer routes, it is best to take the plane as most Algerian Cities are accessible by plane. The Algerian carrier Air Algerie serves cheap flights to El Achir that is mostly directed to the nearby Setif Airport in the city of Setif.
El Achir is a highland city with steep mountains and hills which are great for a more daring and adventurous trekking activities. Many climbing and trekking clubs would find the town a great challenge and a good ground for advancing their members' mountain climbing experience. However, hotels in El Achir are mostly small lodges but most of them offer great service and a good place for stop and sleep over. The town is also not prone to terrorist attacks as most of the attacks are on the northern and southern part of Algeria. El Achir welcomes travelers and tourists with open arms as it is one of the safest places in the highlands of Algeria.
