Dronten is situated in the Flevoland province of central Netherlands and unlike most towns in the country, is of fairly recent origin, coming into existence only in 1959. The town has been built to attract tourists and sports an amazing diversity of recreational facilities, not to mention the wonders of the scenic landscape. It is visited by over a million tourists annually; much of the impetus comes from the many cheap flights to Dronten that are available from all over the world, thanks to the proximity of Amsterdam’s international airport just 89 km distant.
Dronten’s virgin landscape has developed in a few decades into a mature region with many forests, lakes, private agriculture and fruit production. There are plenty of alluring beaches that are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, surfing, and water-skiing, thanks to its 60 km-long coastline. For boaters, the Veluwe is popular for its many amenities. There is a separate space for water skiing and speedboats. The lakes are ideal for canoeing, surfing and sailing. The surrounds comprise thousands of hectares of deciduous and quiet bird-rich forests that are ideal for walking, cycling, skating or horse riding. Ditch Field, near Elburg, is a restored jetty that attracts birds to its ditches; common visitors are plovers, ducks and godwits. Harderbos is home to rugged forest swamps, flowery meadows and bird-rich lakes. Larserbos is a great recreational area with its three beaches, sunbathing and playing fields and hiking and biking trails.
Dronten is a paradise for those in search of outdoor entertainment in the lap of nature. The numerous forests and lakesides provide ample opportunity for camping, while there are plenty of marked trails and routes for cycling and hiking. Roggebotzand, Spijkbo and the Village forest at Swifterbant offer plenty of outdoor leisure opportunities for adults and children alike. The lakes are ideal for canoeing, surfing and sailing. Majority of tourists availing the cheap flights to Drontenis solely focus on enjoying the town’s recreational facilities.
