Dorohoi is located in the Boto?ani County on Jijia River’s right bank as it widens into a lake; once upon a time, it used to be Dorohoi County’s capital but with Northern Bukovina being transferred to the Soviet Union, it reclassified as a municipality. Dorohoi came into prominence as a market for farm produce and timber grown in the highlands of north Moldavia. Today, it enjoys eminence as a tourist destination with numerous heritage monuments that are popular with visitors arriving by the many cheap flights to Dorohoi.
The Museum of Natural Sciences, established in 1953, is housed in a Baroque style building that was originally the home of the then Dorohoi Prefecture. The museum has an enthralling collection of different specimens of birds, snakes and crustaceans, besides a mammoth 250,000 insect collection; a successful exchange programme with collectors from all over has enable it to amass butterflies of over 4,500 types. Many of the insects collected were found to be new species unknown to science.
The St. Nicholas Church was established by Stephen the Great in 1495; the monument features grey sandstone walls and corners of stone. Constructed in the Moldavian architectural style of the realm, the exterior of enamelled bricks is strikingly beautiful and gorgeous with Byzantine elements. There is a large belt of enamelled disks under the cornice that is staggered with red brick rows. There are depictions of Passions of Christ on the walls of the nave; of particular distinction is the simply–executed scene of the crucifixion. There are quite a few valuable paintings that can be seen together with the murals of the founder along with his family in the interior.
The celebrated wooden church in the city centre is one of the biggest attractions for tourists flying in by the cheap flights to Dorohoi; the church is constructed out of oak beams on a foundation built of stone and is considered to be among the nation’s most ancient monuments. Just above the entrance, there is a Cyrillic inscription testifying the details of the establishment of the church. If you are a history buff, you could consider spending a leisurely weekend at one of the hotels in Dorohoi for a truly-memorable holiday.
