About Deva

Deva, the capital of Hunedoara County, is situated on the left bank of Mures River in the historically-significant region of Transylvania. Deva has emerged as an extremely popular tourist destination for its many historical buildings and monuments of significance. The Deva Fortress ruins are the most impressive historically-significant monument in the city. The military fortress sits on top of the Fortress Hill that was once the site of a Dacian settlement. You can climb the 113 steps starting from the city park and then walk along one of the two alleys or reach by a convenient cable car. The Dacian and Roman Civilization Museum has an enthralling collection of forged items, bronze pieces, tools, fabrics and costumes, glass icons and ceramics. The Deva Printing Museum has a collection of printing presses that are still in running condition. The Old Orthodox Church Tower is the sole surviving portion of the church that was built in 1640; while the church was destroyed in a fire, the tower was reconstructed in 1727. The stone and brick-built 18th century Franciscan Monastery constructed in Baroque style has splendid decorations along with statues in the interior. Inside the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral erected in 1861, there are some beautiful 17th century icons and an iconostasis carved in oak.
