Debre Birhan is a metropolitan woreda in the Semien Shewa Zone, Amhara Region, Central Ethiopia. It is nearly 3,000 meters above sea level characterized as having lush, green fields and an enviable cool, relaxing climate. Cheap flights to Debre Birhan are available via three major airports, all of which are less than 150 kilometers away from the city center.
Most vacationers sign up for the Debre Birhan and Ankober Tours. Ankober, only 35 kilometers away from the city center, has quite a long history. It was founded by a local emperor named Zara Yaqob who built a sizable palace including two churches, one of which is devoted to St. Cyriacus in 1456. Unfortunately, the town has seen various battles and rulers. Every single one of them constructed their own strongholds or made structural and design changes in the castles they have siege. You can see some of these fortresses up to this day, making the city one of the most-flocked-to all over the country. For example, the famous Selassie Church has several bible stories depicted on murals on the walls and the ceilings. Sadly, none of what the original emperor built was left.
It is also a modern city with a hydro-electric station built in the area in the 50s to provide the whole town with electricity. It was followed by the construction of a local community school for teachers. Now, this is considered to be a good town for education with several large universities. Wool is the primary produce of the town so you can get jackets, scarves and even rugs and tapestries made of authentic wool. There are over a dozen really good hotels in Debre Birhan. You can have your choice of traditional looking to more modern accommodations. Food is not a problem here. There are restaurants serving decadent local dishes, lots of French pastry shops selling macaroons and petit fours and American fast food chains.
The Bole International Airport located in Addis Ababa is about 120 kilometers (2-3 hours’ drive) away from this town. Aside from the international airport from Addis Ababa, Jigiga and Tum Airports also offer domestic cheap flights to Debre Birhan.
