Visitors of Turkmenistan who want to go to Dasoguz need to secure a special permit to enter the province and explore the city. This place in the northern part of the country is considered a closed zone by the government thus even if you’re a citizen; it’s a little hard to explore the place without having the necessary permit. Once in Dasoguz all your efforts in getting the permit will be worthwhile especially if you get to see some of the notable sites in town.
Visitors coming from Ashgabat and other parts of Turkmenistan can get cheap flights to Dasoguz via Turkmenistan Airlines. The flight is roughly about an hour and cost around 10-12 US dollars. Those who prefer land transport can also travel by train, bus or car from Ashgabat to Dasoguz though the travel time will be a bit longer.
Once in Dasoguz, you can check out some of the famous dinosaur effigies located in the town center. These sculptures are painstakingly crafted by the local artists and it easily became a favored tourist attraction in town. You can also explore other interesting sites in Dasoguz or simply mingle with the locals and learn about their culture. A colorful market called Bai Bazaar is just around the corner if you want to purchase some local produce to eat or local crafts to bring home as souvenirs. You can haggle a bit but ask nicely to avoid offending the vendors and cause untoward incidents.
Your cheap flights to Dasoguz can also be your gateway to visit the city of Konye Urgench and discover different historic sites within such as the Soltan Tekes Mausoleum, the Kutlug Timur Minaret, the Konye Urgench Museum, the Minaret of Mamum and several other mausoleums in and around the city.
Sleeping in is not a problem since there are several decent hotels in Dasoguz like Hotel Uzboy which is the newest in the city, Hotel Diyarbekir where traditional Turkmen cuisines are served, and Hotel Dashogus which is the cheapest among the three. You can also spend the night at Gurgench Hotel for only 6 US dollar per night or in Chapayev Guesthouse which is a little bit farther for as little as 2.50 US dollar.
