In addition Cuenca is an established bohemian city, with a great local art and music scene, Universities (and therefore many students,) bars and lots of nightlife. Wondering what the sky blue colored domed structure is? Visit the Catedral de la Immaculada and visit Cuenca's oldest church dating back to 1885. This beautiful neo-Gothic and Romanesque church is opposite of the Parque Calderon, or Cuenca's main plaza. It's a special cathedral with a beautiful exterior, partially lined in blue Czech tile. The inside features stunning stained glass, an alter, a famous picture of the Virgin Mary as well as a statue of Poe John Paul II. The inside is also ornately adorned in gold leaf, which adds to the church's brilliance. It was originally meant to be much taller, had it not been for a miscalculation on the part of the architect, and therefore it was never finished (it could not support bell towers after this mistake in design and planning.) Book cheap flights to Cuenca and you'll be able to enjoy the Catedral de la Immaculada's splendor and history.
Next visit the Iglesia El Sagrario (the Old Cathdral,) across from the Catedral de la Immaculada, dating back to 1557, the date of the city's founding (and Cuenta's oldest building.) It's a beautiful cathedral, with 1500's art and a fascinating museum inside. There's even a catacomb inside, which you can see through a stained glass window, installed in the floor of the church. It's a wonderful place to visit and should definitely not be missed. If you come on certain days, there's even a harpist playing in the church courtyard. Experience the still standing legend of the Old Cathedral with airline tickets to Cuenca.
Love to go shopping? Cuenta's biggest market day of the week is on Thursday, with a smaller market scene on Sunday. If you're looking to get in on the action, check out either the Plaza Rotary-mostly a product market and the Plaza San Francisco, a market with a variety of goods, including a variety of beautiful local weaving. There's also the Plaza Civica, which is a wonderful place to buy women goods, clothes and handmade items. One of the most popular things to buy in the marketplaces are Panama straw hats, which are locally made. This would be the perfect place to shop for souvenirs.
