Present Craiova is established on the site of Pelendava, an ancient Dacian stronghold; one of the main attractions is its religious buildings; among them, the Church of Cosuna Monastery is the oldest dating back to the 15th century. The Madona Dudu Church is celebrated for its murals by the renowned Romanian artist, Gheorghe Tattarescu. Those with more than a passing interest in heritage should make it a point to visit the Oltenia Museum, a treasure house of regional heritage from the early times. The Art Museum, housed in the Dinu Mihail Palace displays paintings and sculptures by the most well-known Romanian artists. Churches such as the 1720-built Saint Ilie Church, the All Saints Church, the Old Saint Gheorghe Church and the Obedeanu Monastery are splendid examples of Brancovenesti style of architecture that is an amalgamation of traditional Romanian style and elements of Byzantine and Venetian styles. The Jitianu Monk Monastery houses an outstanding assembly of medieval art and objects. The wealth of heritage waiting to be discovered is a good enough reason for you to book one of the many cheap flights to Craiova.
The Nicolae Romanescu Park, a wonderfully-landscaped green oasis built in 1903, is just perfect for relaxation on a sunny afternoon.
