About Cosenza

Calabria’s provincial capital Cosenza is situated at the pint of convergence of two rivers, Crati and Busento. The city has two parts, like many other Italian cities, and each has its own charms. The historic center of the city has survived numerous earthquakes. The grand hilltop castle overshadows the old part of the city. Owing to its rich heritage, it is also known as the Athens of Italy. It is also the native land of Galeazzo di Tarsia and naturalist Bernardino Telesio.

To reach the old Italian city, you can use the Lamezia Terme International Airport. It is about 70 km away from the city and has some cheap flights to Cosenza.

It is in the older part of Cosenza that you can explore the ancient edifices. The Gothic-Cistercian style Cathedral built in the 11th century is a major crowd puller. It was restored in the 19th century afterwards. Inside the cathedral, you can find some magnificent buildings with 15th century origin. There are several narrow and steep alleys in this part of the city. The Piazza del Duomo was made way back in the 6th century. It underwent restoration in 13th and 18th centuries respectively.

The highest point in the city is where you find the Norman Castle. The gates with their remarkable contemporary architecture make tourists marvel. The castle also serves as a gateway to a maze of streets with amazing sculpture and ceramic works.

In the newer part of the city, you will find the church of San Domenico which was renovated in 18th century. Other places worth your interest are Cosentina Academy and Civic Archaeological Museum. The cultural hub of the city is Brettii Museum which was inaugurated in 2009 in S. Agostino monumental complex. You can also explore Open-Air Museum Bilotti and Museum of the Rimembranze in the city. All these edifices and relics of the past coupled with cheap flights to Cosenza draw thousands of travelers to the provincial capital of Calabria.

There are accommodations for people with limited budgets in the city. However, you may look for hotels in Cosenza that are near the older part of the city.
