The town of Corroios is Portugal’s second most populous, coming just after Algueirao-Mem Martins town. Tagus River’s south is where the town is situated. The other side of the river is where Portugal’s capital city Lisbon is located.
Once a tourist takes cheap flights to Corroios, he can visit neighbourhoods like Alto do Moinho, Vale de Milhacos, Miratejo, Verdizela, Pinhal de Vidal and Santa Marta do Pinhal. There are many immigrants from Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa inhabiting the town.
After taking any of the cheap flights to Corroios, tourists can check into good hotels in Corroios and start exploring the town which was once part of the territory under Roman occupation. The town was once an important area for loading of shipments to Lisbon.
In the beginning, Corroios was a village but later on, in 993 to be precise, was promoted to the status of a town. The natural heritage of Corroios is extremely important which is integrated in REN-National Ecological Reserve.
The neighbourhoods of the parish include Miratejo, Santa Marta do Pinhal, Alto do Moinho and Vale de Milhacos where tourists can conduct small trips, excursions and picnics to enjoy the vast vagaries of nature. The main sites of interest at Corroios are Fabrica da Polvora Negra or Fabrica de Polvora de Vale de Milhacos, Rouxinol which has an ancient Roman site worth looking at and Moinho do Castelo or Moinho de Mare de Corroios. The last one is a building which was constructed in 1403 owing to an order from Nuno Alvares Pereira. Major portions of the building were destroyed in 1755’s earthquake. This building is rare in the sense that it uses the area by Tejo Estuary for maintenance. Early 2007 saw the building closing down for conservation. With the work ending in 2009, the building was again opened to the public.
Corroios Modern Music Festival, Corroios Photography Concourse, People’s Festival of Corroios, Public Space Animation, Corroios Video Festival and other such festivals are held here all throughout the year.
