About Chieti

Chieti is a provincial capital town in Italy’s Abruzzo region. Like some other hilltop cities of Italy, it has 2 sections namely Chieti Scalo and Chieti Alta. The location of this city, atop Alento and Pescara river valleys, give tourists some amazing panoramic views and photography buffs find it sheer bliss. The proximity to the Adriatic Sea has also boosted its tourism prospects over the years. The city’s rich heritage and industrial development have worked for it as well.

To reach this city in Abruzzo, you may use the Abruzzo airport. This airport is in Pescara and offers cheap flights to Chieti. It is hardly 11 km away from the city. Chieti has excellent road and rail connectivity to adjacent cities.

The hilltop part of Chieti lets you view historical sites, edifices and churches. The ruins of Roman Teate Marrucinorum are worth exploring. The 11th century Romanesque cathedral is another major edifice in the city. The city’s municipal villa which houses the National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzi has neoclassic architecture. In the museum, you will find some pieces of pre-Roman art as well as a few statues. The famous Martinelli-Bianchi palace houses the Museum of Art. You will find some samples of ceramics, paintings and frescoes here. Another place worth your time in the city is Museum of sacred art of Ortona.

The ancient Roman ruins in some parts of the city are worth seeing, including the temples, thermal baths and theaters. The main street of the town, namely Corso Marrucino, leads to the amazing looking Palazzo de Majo. You will marvel at the most ancient theatre of Abruzzo, Teatro Marrucino, inaugurated in 1818. The S. Giustino church with its nice frescoes inside and bell tower also attracts lots of crowd. Two other churches worth a visit are San Giovanni of the Cappuccini and Saint Peter church. The Roman era ruins, well preserved museums, natural views and cheap flights to Chieti have enhanced its appeal to Italy visitors.

You can find a few decent hotels in Chieti. However, the farmhouse-setup accommodations near the coastal area may catch your fancy too.
