Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province is chiefly noted for two things, Chairman Mao Zedong and Xiang cuisine. With a history of more than 3,000 years, it has experienced being a political, economic and cultural center.
Mao Zedong was born in Shaoshan, a village 130 kilometers to the southwest of Changsha. He studied and taught in Changsha, and organized his first Marxist group in the city. There are a lot of visitors who travel to Changsha to pay homage to the founder of the Communist Party of China.
Situated on the Xiang River, Changsha is the gastronomic capital of Hunan Province, it is also the center of one of the Eight Cuisines of China, the Xiang Cuisine. The Xiang Cuisine is distinguished by the delicate texture and appearance, sweet and sour food, and heat which rivals that of Sichuan Province cuisine.
If there is ever a place where street food may be better than the fare in tourist restaurants, this would be it. The people of Changsha are proud of their style of cooking and the street stalls bear witness to the quality of food as well as the affordability. It is a lot cheaper to eat at the road side stall than any established restaurants. Some of the places to go to in Changsha for the food are Steamed Vegetable Street near the railway station, Jar street where food is simmered in jars, Pozi street, a great place for Changsha snacks can be found and where the famous Fire God Palace is located.
Outside of the city can be found Mt. Yueli. This is where Yueli Academy can be found. Originally built in 976, the academy was a feudal school during ancient times. It has since been integrated into the Hunan Academy. Both the Yueli Academy and Mt. Yueli are great places to visit, both for the history of the place and for their historical significance.
It is suggested that a visit to Mt. Yueli and Yueli Academy be the starting point for any day trip or walking trip. From there, tourists can take a walking tour to Aiwan Pavilion, Lushan Temple and other places of interest. This can be a relaxing walk, but could be tough and grueling due to the terrain.
