Located in Northeast China, Changchun is the capital and largest city of Jilin province. It is famous as the center for development of the Chinese automobile industry because of the number of car manufacturers which operate in the city. With a population of more than seven-and-a-half million people it is a vibrant community with various competitive industries.
Changchun is known by other names besides the City of Automobiles. It is also called Spring City of Northland, Forest City, Barn and the City of Films.
The Changchun Film Studio was the first movie company in the People's Republic of China. Since 1992, the city has hosted the Changchun Film Festival which has served as a showcase of cinematic art and culture.
The city of Chungchun is a pleasant place to visit. Even if it is dependent on an industrial economy, as well as a film industry, the night life is not as exciting as that of other cities like Beijing or Shanghai. It is however, the natural beauty of the area, and the winter sports attractions which the province has to offer.
The main attraction for tourists and visitors are the ski resorts and natural scenery near Changchun. In 2007, Changchun was the site of the Asian Winter Games. For ski enthusiasts, and for those who like the thrill of white powder snow, there are two famous ski resorts, Beidahu and Changbaishan. The Beidahu ski resort is open from mid-November to mid-February. It boasts of a 10 kilometer cross-country and a 1,249 meter advanced trail. From Changchun Longjia International Airport, it takes 2 and a half hours taxi-drive to get to Beidahu.
Changbaishan Ski Resort is in the Changbaishan forest reserve, located 500 kilometers from Changchun City. It is 1820 meters above sea level and has both Alpine and Nordic trails for skiing. It also has snow mobile rentals and is a good ski area for beginners up to advanced level skiers. The ski resort also has hot spring baths.
Changchun is a flat city and is great for walking around, except for its large sprawl. The best way to enjoy the visit would be to ride the old number 54 tram. Otherwise, buses and the light rail are the best options in getting around the city cheaply.
