About Castelo Branco

The city of Castelo Branco is located in Beira Baixa in central Portugal. The name comes from a fortified settlement or Luso-Roman castrum named Castra Leuca. There are a number of tourist attractions in the city which make it worthwhile for people to take cheap flights to Castelo Branco. The city is the capital of Castelo Branco district.

The church had had to undergo many alterations due to ruins which have greatly modified the original architecture. The sight from there is beautiful and in the north, tourist can catch views of the mountain ranges of Gardunha and Star.

The most significant tourist attraction is Garden of Episcopal Palace which is a very extraordinary Portuguese baroque garden. The garden contains various statues of zodiacal signs, kings and allegories which have been arranged around staircases, terraces and ponds. Everywhere around the garden are symbols of allegories and various Biblical connotations.

Church of Saint Miguel attracts many tourists and despite its ruins, what remains of it gives proof of it being built during the Renaissance period. There is only a nave that remains separated from the chapel.

There are numerous museums that can be visited to drink in the rich cultural heritage of the city. These include Museum Cargaleiro, Museum of Junior Francisco Tavares Proenca and Museum of Religious Art. The latter one was founded in 1984 and is located at Convent of Grace.
