Caparica or Costa da Caparica, as it is also known as, is a simple and friendly town on Tejo River’s southern side, just about 30 minutes away from the capital city of Lisbon. It is located in Almada municipality. Originally a fishing village, it’s beautiful and relatively unpolluted beaches attract people who take cheap flights to Caparica. In fact, even today, women peddle their fresh catch on the street sides. Especially during the summer months, many Lisboans catch cheap flights to Caparica to escape from the city.
There are many fish restaurants, bars and good hotels in Caparica for tourists. There are many colourful boats for people to go about and have some fun riding in it. Behind the high cliffs, there is a Capuchin monastery from the 16th century which is worth a visit. Every summer, a lively Music Festival is held here which is carefully ringed by beautifully kept gardens. There are some excellent views to be enjoyed from the convent. A lagoon called Lagoa de Albufeira lies in this protected area’s south and is separated by a dune line from the beach. The lagoon provides excellent opportunities for sailing.
The beaches of Caparica do not get too crowded and there are many options to choose from. The beach is actually 10 km long which is divided into numerous small sections by dune. In fact, during summer, there is a small train that stops alongside the various parts of the beach. Not only bathing but surfing also is a popular option. The beaches which are further away from the main town are scarcely populated.
Those looking for a fun and adventurous family destination should opt for Lagoa da Albufeira campsite. This place teaches windsurfing. The protected zone of Arriba Area spreads over one thousand hectares and contains a vast and rich array of rocks and fossils, some of which are as old as 15 million years.
Those who love golfing or are interested in the game can visit Aroeira’s new golf course which has numerous lakes around its last nine holes. This holiday and leisure complex is Lisbon area’s biggest golfing centre.
