Câmara de Lobos or chamber of wolves as it literally means, is a beautiful city in the Madeira island. This city is like a traditional village with fishing as the main occupation for the inhabitants. It is located about 5 km away from Funchal. The explorers Tristao Vaz Teixeira and Joao Goncalves Zarco gave the name due to the shape of the bay and the sea lions or lobos which used to stay there at the time.

The place was once a village which has recently been elevated to the status of a city. It not only has a wonderful bay but also many places of interest like Cabo Girao, Boca dos Namorados, Curral das Freiras and Pico da Torre. Again, there are two places that can be visited from there – pass through Boca da Corrida to reach Quinta do Jardim da Serra or visit Boca dos Namorados to admire the beautiful landscape and scenery of Curral das Freiras.

Another attraction which should not be missed at any cost is the Cabo Girao which is the world’s second highest cliff and offers excellent panoramic views.

There are some mixed attractions which form the civil parish’s historic heritage. These include the chapels, church of Sao Sebastian, old saltpans, lime-kiln, an old convent at Sao Bernardion, and bandstand at the Largo da Republica. Another must-have is ‘poncha’, a delicious mixture of sugarcane spirit, honey and lemon juice, available at any local tavern.
