Bukan is an Iranian city located in the south of Lake Urma in the West Azerbaijan Province in Iran. It is 1,300 meters above sea level which means that residents sort of enjoy a good climate compared to other areas in the country. They do not have a very sound reputation these days in terms of peace and quiet due to the ongoing fights between the revolutionary Kurds and the government. Also, being high above the sea level, there are no direct cheap flights to Bukan. Nonetheless, it is a very beautiful place and a must-see.
Iran has a very long and interesting history dating back 3,000 years. Bukan is one of the areas which is proud of its past. The region was formerly known as Mannaeas – the capital of which was known as Izirtu. Their neighboring civilizations were the Assyrians and Urartus. Due to ancient struggles and war, Mannaeas fell under the control of more powerful towns. It is quite sad that very little of the past can be seen in present Bukan. Some of the artifacts and beautiful age old artworks are displayed in the art gallery of the University of Tokyo in Japan. Qajar and Mokriyan are other fortified cities in the vicinity of present-day Bukan.
Like in most places in Iran, the main religion in the area is Islam. Life in this area is quite simple. Most families do farming or work in other fields of agriculture. There are other industries in the area but it really is not well known as a tourist place in Iran. Nevertheless, there are still several notable hotels in Bukan. However, the rest of West Azerbaijan Province has several good sights to see such as the throne of Solomon. Neighboring cities may also offer great hotel rooms and rates as well.
One can get into the city by bus from other areas. Locals prefer driving since the highways are well-made. There are no direct cheap flights to Bukan. The nearest major airport is in Bonab, a little over 100 kilometers from the city. The Sahand Airport offers domestic flights only. The other airport is 30 kilometers farther than the one in Bonab – the Sulaimaniyah International Airport.
