Brasschaat is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region, north of Antwerp. This municipality is known for its greenery. Antwerp International Airport is closest to this place, about 16 km from its center. Owing to its strategic position, Brasschaat was given the status of a military outpost of major importance, during the First World War for the security and protection of the Antwerp Port. The Brasschaat fort that survives till today was constructed in 1912. The fortifications were strengthened and expanded between 1937 and 1939. A huge antitank ditch was constructed and many bunkers were added to enhance security arrangements.
Brasschaat today is well known in Belgium for its plethora of fascinating shops, restaurants, bars and cafes all along its high streets.
