Braine-l’Alleud has immense historical significance. The Battle of Waterloo site is in this town, where Duke of Wellington had defeated Napoleon Bonaparte on 18th of June, 1815. Presently, the battlefield is highlighted by a lion figure made apparently from melted down cannons which were in use during the course of the battle. This Butte du Lion is a huge conical artificial hill erected on the famous battlefield and the hill-top has a statue of a lion that is fixed to a stone-block pedestal. The model lion that was created by sculptor Jean-François Van Geel resembles the famous Medici lions.
The lion is symbolic of courage and it is shown putting its right front paw on a sphere which signifies global supremacy and victory. The statue is 4.45m high, 4.5m long and weighs 28 tonnes. There is a visitor center and wax museum in the vicinity, that help tourists in retracing the events relating to the battle. The centrally located St-Etienne church in Braine-l'Alleud was then given the status of a hospital of the countryside.
The town also flaunts a small fountain sculpture made of bronze that shows a naked little fellow urinating into the fountain. This is a smaller-sized version of the renowned Mannekenpis and is called "Il Gamin Quipiche".
