Beringen is a Belgian city and municipality located in the Limburg province. It also includes the old provinces of Paal, Koersel, and Beverlo. With an intriguing history and a number of interesting, fun-filled locations, Beringen is developing into a much preferred tourist spot as well. Beringen is one of the oldest Belgian cities, and was inhabited even in the Celtic times, around 90 BC. A number of artifacts and gold coins have been discovered here during archaeological expeditions. During the 13th century, the city underwent an architectural makeover and was surrounded by regal walls and impressive moats. The area developed into a large site for coal mines. These resources gained foremost importance during and after World War II. By 1989, however, all coal mines closed down.

The city has always been known for its landscapes. Bikers are most welcome to enjoy the beauty of this town firsthand, thanks to a great network of biking trails. Also, it offers a number of festivities for citizens and tourists alike. Annual Kermesses are held here and an all-day musical event, Paal op Stelten, is held every August. However, the most popular festival is the Koersel Terrast which lasts for two days in spring and where the citizens celebrate all day among dance, music and fireworks.
