Bechar is an isolated city that lies between the border zone of Sahara and the Atlas Mountains and lying close to Morrocco. It is situated on the foot of Bechar Mountain and serves as the capital of the province of Bechar, Algeria.
Bechar is a desert town with narrow and covered streets lined with traditional Algerian houses with high stone border walls and In between are modern structures and building housing restaurants and shops. The city is a typical example of Algerian cities with mixed Western influence and Arab traditions.
Walking around the city would allow travelers to experience walking in Alleyways with arches reminiscent of a casbah during the Ancient times where goods such as carpets, hand woven baskets, turban, fez, burnous and gandoura are being sold. But there is also an open air market where travelers can feast on the fine hand-made jewelries of gold, silver and other precious metals and stones.
The dessert is Bechar's famous attractions. Bechar dessert offers fascinating experience like the hammadas and sabkhah as when the dry season hits the area, most of the city's landscape turns into sandy dessert. Famous of these are Grand Erg Occidental, the Erg Iguidi and the Erg er-Raoul. Tourists with cheap flights to Bechar should coordinate with the local government for any dessert adventure to ensure their safety as these shifting sandy dunes can be really dangerous. There are Desserts Tours that are organized by the Algerian Tourism Office and most of them are cheaper and are guaranteed to be safe.
Bechar’s sceneries are made beautiful by Date Palm Tree groves stretching to 200 miles with land forms that form ravines. With mining as an important industry, there are some coalfields in Kenadsa and a housing project was built here to house workers in the coalfields. This housing project is the reason why there is now the so called New Bechar; an indication that Bechar is now ready for developments in favor of modernization.
There are no luxury hotels in Bechar but only small cottage-lodge type catering to transient travelers. Most of the best hotels are found near the airport where cheap flights to Bechar are served. It is one among Algerian cities that has an airport.
