The Grand-Place, the market square has been revamped recently with two wonderful fountains, striking benches and superb lighting that automatically creates a warm ambiance. It comprises the Town Hall, St. Martin’s Church and St Julian's Church. The Baroque style Town Hall was constructed in 1624 by Cobergher, a multi-talented architect. The edifice, however, was almost totally reconstructed in the 1980s. The Church of St. Martin dates back to the 16th century. It has an exterior oak Calvary and a magnificent 16th century Entombment inside. The church of Saint Julien still flaunts a Gothic style tower, a 16th century carillon and also the apsidal chapel. The massive square and flat-buttressed Burbant Tower was constructed by the Count of Hainaut, Baudoin IV in the year 1166, for strengthening security in the Hainut’s border shared with Flanders. This famous military complex is four-storied. Come and stay in one of the fine hotels in Ath and explore the wonderful monuments here.
