About Assisi

Without a doubt, Assisi is an Italian city which has built its identity on the Catholic Saint, Saint Francis, with the Basilica di San Francesco attracting tourists and Christian pilgrims for hundreds of years. The Basilican di San Chiara, dedicated to St. Clare has also been a major draw for religious pilgrims. Most find this city to be restorative, peaceful and quite meditative after the hustle bustle of Rome. If you’re already ready to look at flights to Assisi, Italy, Flighthub has got you covered, offering the internet’s lowest prices.

Basilica di San Francesco

Start your trip with a visit to the Basilica di San Francesco, the cornerstone of any visit of Assisi, a grand cathedral built on the site of St. Francis’ birth, and also housing his remains in the cathedral’s crypt. Everyone agrees that the church is incredibly peaceful and meditative, with an atmosphere of calm. Built in 1253, the sunning white marble exterior of this grand building, coupled with the impressive fresco work of Giotto, Martini and Cimbaue, all featuring scenes from the life of St. Francis, and are artistically stunning. Tip: The crypt houses the stone sarcophagus of St. Francis himself, the beloved Catholic Saint and is said to be truly a highlight of any trip, and is recommended for any visitor.

Basilica di Santa Chiara

Basilica di Santa Chiara is a church meant to honor St. Clare, which also houses her sarcophagus and crypt, since 1872. A church devoted to the simple, humble piety of St. Clare, the church houses her hair and nun’s robes. The church also houses the cross where St. Francis heard a call to rebuild his church. The church was actually the first appointment of St. Francis, where he lived for a portion of his life. Tip: St. Clares’ remains are also housed in the crypt of the church, in a stunning marble sarcophagus, made in the 1800’s. Although many decry the beautiful marble sarcophagus exterior as being unsuitable for a woman who denounced worldly goods and pleasures for a life of piety, chastity and devotion to the poor, it is still very much recommended to visit.

San Damiano

It was here that St. Francis’ call to rebuild his church was answered, and is a church located in the lush beauty of nature, something which St. Francis was especially fond of. This is also the church where St. Clare and her cloister resided, so it’s really interesting to take a walk in her footsteps, and see where she slept in her dormitory, and where her cloister resided. This is truly a stunning church set in the quiet of nature, and is highly recommended to all.

Roman Temple of Minerva

A Roman temple converted into a Catholic Church, it still retains its Roman, columned façade of Minerva’s (Athena’s) temple. A walk inside reveals a Renaissance-style church. Lovers of Rome and Roman architecture best stay outside for this one.
