Arad, the capital of Arad County, is a beautiful city on the banks of the Mures River in western Romania. A multi-cultural city, the history of Arad dates back to the 11th century; there are historically-significant buildings and monuments, interesting museums and a lovely countryside that has great appeal for tourists arriving from all over by the plentiful cheap flights to Arad.
Tourists with an interest in architecture will be enthralled to discover that the cathedrals and churches in the city span over four hundred years and boast of various denominations and styles of architecture that range from Baroque to Neoclassical. There are a number of historically-significant Christian Orthodox monasteries; Hodos-Bodrog dates back to 1177 while Bezdin goes back to 1334. Many of the interesting buildings are on the Bulevardul Revolutiei, the city’s principal thoroughfare. The impressive City Hall Palace sports a richly-decorated mix of classical and renaissance architectural styles. The Palace of Culture is an impressive monument with a tower, neoclassical frontage and huge Corinthian colonnades.
The Roman Catholic Church dome is a sight to see while the neo-gothic and secessionist-style architecture of the Red Church is simply amazing. The Arad Fortress is a six-pointed star-shaped Vauban-style bastion. The town has a large presence of Jews; the two synagogues are situated in the picturesque heritage Jewish quarter. If you are intending to visit by one of the cheap flights to Arad, be sure not to miss the city’s museums; Muzeul de Arheologiesi Istorie has the most fascinating exhibits of regional heritage while the Art Museum and the Natural Sciences Museum will keep you enthralled for hours.
Those in search of nature’s delights will not be disappointed; just 15 miles to the east is the lovely Minis Maderat Vineyard that has an impressive heritage of producing fine wines favoured by connoisseurs from all over Europe. Close by is the Lipova Spa with its celebrated therapeutic mineral water springs. Go a little more to admire the remains of the 13th century Soimos Fortress that guarded the Transylvania – Crisana trade route. With so much waiting to be discovered, staying back for a few days in one of the excellent hotels in Arad is recommended.
