Andijan is the capital city of Andijan province and the fourth largest city in Uzbekistan. It is an important stop in the Silk Road and used to be a hinterland farming area producing silk and cotton. In 1902, a devastating earthquake leveled the city and claimed 4,500 lives. During World War II, many Russians evacuated in the city and thus formed the majority of the population. Today's Andijan is an industrial center with silk and cotton production.
Andijan suffered several setbacks because of unstable politics caused by uprising from Islamic Fundamentalists creating poverty and tensions in the whole province of Andijan province.
However, there are still many places of interest in Andijan as there are hotels in Andijan that offer good accommodation for the city's guests. One of these is the famous Hotel Afrosiyob serving authentic Uzbekistan hospitality.
Walking along the Ozbekiston Street is a pleasant experience especially during the celebration of the Independence Day when the people go out in the streets to celebrate. This is also the best time to visit the city as Independence Day is celebrated with vibrant activities filling up a whole day holiday event. Most of the government initiated festivals are held during the celebration. This gives travelers from cheap flights to Andijan opportunities to experience the city and its people.
Once in the city, it is best to observe modest dressing as Islam is the dominant religion. Uzbekistan airways serve cheap flights to Andijan and public transport like bus and taxi are the common way to travel in and around the city. For faster route, it is best to take flights from Osh International Airport which is only 26.4 miles from the city and you can save a lot of traveling time using this route.
In the center of the city lies the Babur Monument which is highly redeem by the people. The monument is magnificent in aspect of the arts of Sculpture. There is also a mural found in the Town Square depicting the heroic act of Babur in his attempt to liberate the city from its conquerors.
You can also roam around the Town Square but make sure you don't discuss about the infamous Andijan massacre if you don't want to have your stay in the city abruptly interrupted or shortened. Enjoy the city and the people, and their unique culture by simply respecting rules and religion.
