About Altenrhein

St. Gallen-Altenrhein is a small airport at Alternrhein in the district of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It is situated on the Swiss side of Lake Constance, which is also referred to as the Bodensee. The cemented eastbound runway consists of an Instrumental Landing System whose use is required from time to time because of the Bodensee’s rapidly evolving weather conditions.

The origin of St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport goes back to as early as 1926 when the decision to construct the popular ‘Flying Boat’ DO-X was taken by Professor Claude Dornier. The original grass runway of 600 meters was constructed in the year 1927. It was used on a regular basis for scheduled fights to Innsbruck, Dubendorf, Munich and Basel at that time. The present length of the runway is 1500 meters. You can know about all these and much more by booking cheap flights to Altenrhein Airport.

The airport infrastructure is upgraded from time to time. For instance, between 1998 and 1990, an airport terminal building and new hangars were built along with the installation of an instrument landing system. Significant investments were also made to enhance its security and safety by installing equipment like a weather station, fire fighting vehicles, X-ray machines for checking of baggage and a Skiddometer. Thus, if you book cheap flights to Altenrhein Airport, you do not have to worry about your safety.

The airport has one travel agency, two check-in desks, one restaurant, two valet parking services, one bus stop and six taxi ranks. The Rorschach and Rheineck stations are in close proximity, which offer easy connectivity to other cities and towns in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The RTB Rheintal public bus service’s stop is also nearby so that traveling from the airport to any location won’t be a problem for you at all.

There are many luxurious hotels in Altenrhein which can make your stay in the city memorable. Many of them are located near the airport, particularly meant for tourists keen to explore other cities. All they have to do is book a flight to a nearby city in Switzerland and they can fly there in no time.
