Al Fayyum is the oldest city in Egypt and one among the oldest cities in Africa. It is about 130 kilometers from the southwest of Cairo and boasts of a canal called Bahr Yussef which both banks are filled with houses, bazaars and government offices.
There are several nearby airports that serve cheap flights to Al Fayyum. Sidi Barani Airport which is 7.2 miles from the city center and Mustin Alf Airport which is 18.2 miles away from the center of Fayyum serve as airlines with cheap flight to Al Fayyum. The fastest route to Al Fayyum is by a motor vehicle from Cairo. The trip is usually not more than two hours via the national highway connecting Cairo to Al Fayyum. You can take a bus from Ahmed Helmi or Giza terminals in Cairo which is cheaper than hiring a taxi or with a car hire. Driving around the city is not advisable for tourists as Egyptian drivers are among the worst drivers in the world.
Al Fayyum has several places of interest that are a must-see for tourists. These include canals like Bahr Yussef and Joseph's Canal which is believed built by the biblical Joseph. With these two beautiful canals that transverse through the city, Al Fayyum is tagged as the "Venice of Egypt". Water wheels that were built by the Greek settlers in ancient Al Fayyum are also a main attraction. From the northern entrance of Al Fayyum stands an ancient Obelisk that has a rounded top and a clef where a golden statue of ancient god Ra stands.
Although Al Fayyum is a tourist destination, most hotels in Fayyum are located in some distances from the city itself. There are a few high-end hotels that are a few kilometers from the city and most are located in Qaroun Lake. Those found in the city center near the market and the bazaars are small B&B hotels catering to backpackers and for travelers with limited budget.
