Of all the cities in Ethiopia, Aksum is perhaps one of the most interesting. Not only does it have a wide collection of monasteries, churches, tombs, stelae and old palaces it also has one of the most scenic view in the country with its rich vegetation and long stretches of farmlands. It’s no wonder why Aksum receives hundreds of visitors every year in its land.
First time visitors to the city will be delighted to know that there are available cheap flights to Aksum offered by the airlines servicing Aksum Airport. Booking for a flight is easy via their websites and usually those who purchase tickets online can avail of a huge discount on their airfares. At the airport are several taxis that can take you to the city proper but rental cars are also available if you prefer to travel privately to Aksum. Once in the city, travelling won’t be a problem even if you don’t have a private transportation since there are mini buses that can take you from one destination to another for a very cheap rate. Tourist buses are also available but if you know the place fairly well it will be cheaper and wiser to just explore the city on foot.
One of the most popular sites to see when you take cheap flights to Aksum is the historic Church of St. Mary of Zion. According to the old myths, this legendary church is said to house the stolen Ark of the Covenant and though the Ark is housed on a chapel which is not open to anyone the controversies surrounding the Ark’s history make people take a trip to the city just to glimpse this legendary church.
When nighttime approaches you can either go out of the city and look for decent accommodation in another place or book for a room at some of the cheap hotels in Aksum like the government-owned Yeha Hotel, the Kaleb Hotel with its 40-birr rooms and the Africa Hotel which is a little better than the first two hotels.
