About Akita

Coming in from Tokyo, you can take any domestic flight serving Akita airport. From the airport, a 40 minute bus ride connects to Akita Station. The bus ticket is sold at Y980. If you wish to take the train, take the Akita Shinkansen and take the Komachi train. You have to buy your ticket, as komachi trains are only for reserved seating. The komachi trains one way ticket costs Y6.800. For foreign travelers, in order to limit the chance of getting lost, it is recommended to get the national Japan trail pass or the suica card. This suica card will save you from the hassles of not knowing how much the fare will cost you. It is a prepaid e-money card used in boarding trains or buses. The fare is automatically deducted from the card. You can pay the deposits of Y2, 000 which Y500 is refundable. It is a great way to save train or bus fare.

From Akita Station, you can take the bus to see the beautiful Senshu Park. The park houses the Akita Castle built in 733 AD. You have to pay a small entrance fee to see the inside of the mighty Castle. You will enjoy the panoramic view of Akita City from the top floor of the Castle while the museum in the lower floor has a museum that displays historical artifacts of this magnificent castle. Senshu Park is more beautiful during springtime when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.

If you take a cab or a car, from the post office you go north and take Highway 56 and turn right toward highway 72. Suehiro is another good ramen house which is near the Akita City House and a block away from Sanno Odori.

This city capital of Akita Prefecture is best known for their beautiful women. The Kamachi train with white and pink stripes designs are said to symbolize the beauty of Akita women. It hosts the Kanto Festival held from August 3 to August 6. The highlight of this festival is the display of balancing prowess of men carrying kanto or long bamboo poles with 20 or more paper lanterns attached at both ends. The festival’s ticket is sold in advance as tickets are easily sold out.
