Although just a parish, its high population provides it with enough reason to become a city in the near future. In fact, presently, it is Porto and Northern Portugal’s most populous town. It is believed that the city existed since 6th century. However, there are no documents to testify the date. There are documents from 1120 and 1405 though. According to legends, there is a story that goes behind the particular name. It is said that a convent’s mother superior heard of the Romans approaching from a source and hid Virgin Mary’s image. When the image was unwrapped, it was seen that the lady in the image was crying. When people heard this news, they started calling it Fountain Águas Santas. Later on, the Church of Monastery of Águas Santas was built near where it was supposed to have been hidden.
The rich historical and cultural heritage of the place makes it stand out. The attractions, buildings and monuments of the town are both archaeologically and artistically beautiful pieces. The architecture of the Águas Santas monastery is mixed and varied due to the many reforms suffered by it through ages. A grave in the local cemetery is graced by a beautiful bronze sculpture created by Soares dos Reis.
Águas Santas celebrates some religious festivities in the form of celebrations associated with Patron Our Lady of O on July’s first Sunday and Good Friday’s Lord’s burial.
